»Endpunkt der Erdachse«: Das Substantiv wurde im frühen 18. Jh. aus gleichbed. lat. polus entlehnt, das seinerseits aus griech. pólos »Drehpunkt, Achse; Erdpol« übernommen ist. Stammwort ist griech. pélein »in Bewegung sein«, das zu der unter ↑ Hals dargestellten Wortsippe der idg. Wurzel ku̯el- »‹sich› drehen« gehört. – In der Physik bezeichnet »Pol« den Aus- oder Eintrittspunkt magnetischer Kraftlinien, in der Elektrotechnik den Aus- oder Eintrittspunkt des Stromes bei einer elektrischen Stromquelle, beachte dazu das abgeleitete Verb polen »an einen elektrischen Pol anschließen«. – Abl.: polar »am Pol befindlich, die Pole betreffend« (18. Jh.; nlat. Bildung), auch übertragen gebraucht im Sinne von »entgegengesetzt wirkend, gegensätzlich«, dazu das Substantiv Polarität »Vorhandensein zweier Pole; Gegensätzlichkeit« (18./19. Jh.); beachte auch Bildungen wie »Polarkreis, Polarnacht, Polarwind«.
